Bass-heavy sample collages (Cold Water) live alongside hyperkinetic freak-outs (Little Dove), solemn spirituals (Young), and hypnotic hooks (All In Your Hands). On single Eventide, Christian’s sweet falsetto soars among unsettling drones, pulsating cellos and a funked out rhythm section. On centerpiece Carole, gentle flutes hover atop a mangled drum machine, while a celestial choir ushers in the song’s towering second act ; a dramatic melee of harpsichords and swirling synthesizers. Hallelujah Showers is rife with the meticulous ambition of pop auteurism, without ever abandoning the quirks that make it feel distinctly homespun.
